Planning a Kansas City Wedding | How Long Will It Take?

If you’re reading this, I’m betting you just got (or are expecting) a very special new piece of jewelry. Probably one that typically requires you to plan a wedding. Once you announce to your friends and family, get ready for the inevitable interrogation. Their number one question will be “So when’s the big day?”🎉

In this blog, we’re going over all the things you’ll want to consider when deciding the length of your engagement. You and your partner might be ready to dive head-first into planning or you may prefer to relax and take things slow for now. Either way, no worries, because the fact of the matter is: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. It really depends on your vision and priorities. You could say “I do” in just a few weeks, or you might decide to plan for a few years. But if you’re aiming for a seamless, organized, and all-around amazing celebration, just know it’ll take a bit of time and effort to make it happen!

So how far out should you start to plan a wedding?

As we noted above, there’s no clear cut. Most of our couples spend about a year to a year and a half planning their wedding. This timeframe allows plenty of time for understanding priorities, booking vendors, finding the right venue, and ensuring all of the details align with your vision. It’s enough time to feel confident in your decisions but not so much time that you can overthink every detail. However, keep in mind you can certainly plan your wedding in less or more time.

There are lots of factors that go into figuring out how long you might need to plan. We’ve listed a few of those below:

• What is your personal timeline? Wedding planning can quickly become a full-time job, but you probably have other things going on in your life (career, school, family or personal health situations, buying a home, etc.). You have a life outside of wedding planning, and that will play a role in deciding the best wedding date. 

• What time of year do you ideally want to get married and is this flexible? During peak season in Kansas City, venues might be harder to come by. Peak season is generally April, May, June, September, and October. So if you are set on having a spring or early fall wedding, especially on a Saturday, you may need to push your timeline out a little further or stay flexible on the day of the week. Vendors also tend to book up quickly during peak season, so you’ll need to book top-priority vendors early.

• How elaborate is your design vision? We love elaborate weddings, but strong themes, extensive decorations, and multiple events may require a longer planning period. Custom decor, full venue transformations, and detailed design visions require careful planning and execution.
