It may be a bit out-of-season, but I couldn’t wait any longer to share this Wicked-themed black and white wedding shoot.
As a wedding planner, I love styled shoots. They let me be more creative than a typical wedding, connect me with other Kansas City wedding vendors I haven’t had a chance to work with (or ones that I already know I love), and they’re just relaxed and fun to execute. PLUS at the end of this shoot, we got to open up the space to other Kansas City wedding vendors!
When Abby with Thursday Therapy told me that October’s styled shoot and networking meeting would be at The Vox Theatre, I knew I wanted to draw inspiration from Broadway. I debated between a few different options. But with Halloween right around the corner (and the movie with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the works), a Wicked wedding was the obvious choice.
While not entirely accurate to the production, we selected models to take on the personas of Glinda and Elphaba. The juxtaposition of the two inspired me to create a design using almost exclusively black, white, and Emerald City green.
Starting with the stationery, Megan from Rock Scissors Paperie absolutely knocked it out of the park with these witchy invitations. She texted me letting me know that she had a crazy idea about a 3D bubble save-the-date, and she did not disappoint with the results.
Caitlin with Designwise KC created the most fun escort display and a moody black flower wall, complete with signage and poppies. If you’re looking for custom party and event decor (she does rentals too), then you need to reach out!
With the stage as our altar, Nicole with Indigo Rose Florals created a striking backdrop and a couple of beautiful bouquets to match.
The vendor team had a ton of fun playing with smoke, bubbles, cake, and lighting while Elizabeth captured some truly one-of-a-kind wedding portraits inside of the theatre.
Afterward, I began designing the sweetheart table and getting details ready for Thursday Therapy (aka being Paige’s cocktail taste tester). How fun is this lighting design that Carolyn came up with?? She was inspired by the lighting in the stage production of Wicked, which created an ambiance as vendors walked in.
Meanwhile, our beautiful brides ventured outside for more photos. I’ve been in love with black wedding dresses for a while, and this chic gown was perfect for Brie/Elphaba. And the sparkle on Robin’s dress?? I don’t think it could be any more Glinda. Shoutout to Madison with The One Bridal for helping me find the perfect dresses and for sticking around so the dresses looked flawless all day.
After that, our lovely brides got to cuddle close at their sweetheart table, sipped a few cocktails, and hung out for a bit to mingle with some vendors!
This shoot truly was so much fun to work on. I’m beyond grateful to Abby for reaching out (and for being a massive help with planning since this all happened at the tail end of my maternity leave).
